We will miss her dearly“- these were the words delivered by Fanny Lai, group chief executive of Wildlife Reserves Singapore about the death of the death of Ah Meng. Ah Meng is no other than the Singapore Zoo’s celebrity orangutan.

Orang’s are the native of Indonesia and Malaysia and are best known for their intelligence. They are having reddish brown hairs and long arms. They have been placed under highly endangered list owing to the reason of higher destruction of their rain forest habitats.

Ah Meng, the celebrity orangutan was born in Indonesia and brought to the Zoo at 11 years old from a family those maintained her as an illegal pet.

This Orangutan took part in 30 travel films and also featured with many movie stars. Ah Meng actively took part in “breakfast with Ah Meng” session with visitors also.

Most of the important celebrities like pop singer Michael Jackson, Magician David Copperfield and Britain’s prince Philip had rubbed shoulders with this famous Orangutan.

Singapore Zoo is going to name the next new-borne orangutan as Ah Meng junior as a tribute to this orangutan.

She died at the age of 48, which is equal to 95 human years. She leaves behind six grandchildren, two daughters, and two sons.

Last sunday (10-02-08) Singapore Zoo organized a special memorial on Sunday as a tribute to Ah Meng, the celebrity orangutan.
